How To Use And Care For Hard Hats

By Cornelia White

Hard hats are types of helmets that are worn when carrying out certain duties like construction and mining. Some of them are fitted with safety visors, flashlights, ear protectors and chinstraps among others. The color of the head gear may signify different roles of employees this depends with a company or your place of work.

Inspect the gear during purchase to ensure that the suspension and shell are fine before buying it. Cleaning of these kinds of helmets should be done using reagents that the manufacturer has specified. Some cleaning agents will react negatively by weakening the shell and the whole helmet as time goes by. When cleaning the gear should be immersed in hot water, scrub it and rinse with hot water.

Too much exposure to sunlight is not good as ultraviolet rays from the sun and the heat reduce the strength of the helmet. Keep your hat in a cool and if they are being transported from the factory to the market, they should be packaged well and placed far away from the rear window of the vehicle. In case you work in an environment where you are exposed to too much sunshine, ensure to replace the gear more often.

Paint reacts badly when it comes into contact with these kinds of hats. It weakens the shell and removes the electrical resistance. Be careful when painting and in case paint drops on the hat it should be removed immediately as instructed by the manufacturers using specific methods or cleaning agents.

Carry out a simple test to check whether there has been degradation on the covering. This is done by squeezing the case inwards using both hands and realizing the pressure. Where it returns immediately to its normal shape, it shows elasticity. Any deformation or in case the shell is not elastic you should consider replacing it immediately.

Team helmets are worn by people who work in the same team or play for the same team. The cap helps team members in identifying each other. These caps have suspensions that are comfortable and very easy to adjust.

When used as instructed hard hats can be used for a very long period of time especially if you work in places with normal temperatures. Replace the helmet after 5years thou some of them can be worn for more than 10 years. If the employees work under very hot conditions, then they should replace the wear at least after 2 years.

If during the process of working the head gear got struck by a hard or sharp object then the covering should be replaced. This needs to be done irrespective of whether the damages are visible or not. These hats are designed to provide protection to the wearer therefore any damage or forceful impact will reduce the protection that the hard hats offers.
