Shrewd People Opt To Collect Jewelry

By Andrea Davidson

Everyone seems to have a hobby and some of these involve collecting different things. Some are quite familiar like stamps or baseball cards, for others it can be something like art or antiques. Nowadays there are a growing number who have decided to collect jewelry. No matter what a person ends up collecting it is something that they can enthuse about. Perhaps if they have been fortunate with their collection it might even become very valuable.

It should be obvious but one of the first things to do is to decide what you would like to begin collecting. It should be something that interests you, otherwise you will soon become bored and disinterested. If it is something that you are presently interested in, then you might already be a member of an online group.

There is still plenty on your subject matter that you can learn. Some books and publications are better than others, but books can only teach you so much. It is so much better to be able to seek guidance from those who have had a long standing, active interest in the same field as you. Listen to them and try to learn.

Try to think of the limits of your new collection, do you opt for a wide ranging collection across the genres, or will you attempt to be more focused. For most people starting out the wider approach seems to suit them best, and then as they become more experienced then can start to focus. Anything new can feel slightly intimidating, but always try to get some helpful pointers from more experienced collectors.

Once you have started gaining a little bit of confidence it is time to put your learning into practice. Ideal places to start are flea markets and auction houses if you are looking to build a serious collection. Initially many people advise avoiding antique fairs, the dealers there can spot someone new to the field. Although you might end up with a nice piece you might well have paid a vastly inflated fee.

There are many different areas that people try to focus their collections on. For some it might be items from Italian fashion houses. Others are more orientated towards a particular period in history. There are enough items out there for everyone as people have been wearing, and making, such pieces for a long time.

For anyone interested in a certain period in history, the best advise is to do plenty of research. Consider how they created these items, and how the stones were set, learn how they were fastened or linked. When inspecting the item look for the maker's stamp, and also for any signs or damage or repairs. Even if something looks right but the materials seem wrong remember that various copies would have been made for different marketplaces.

There are many genres within the field, so there seems to be something that appeals to most people. Some like the pieces that commemorate events, some like the pieces that promote products, others like the fun items. There is always someone wanting to share their experiences when you start to collect jewelry.
