DON'T overlook the ongoing nature of the fashion industry. Among the many duties of a fashion merchandiser is the ability to stay up-to-date with trends. Like most industries, fashion changes on a regular basis, even down to the simplest details. What this means is that you cannot simply overlook the industry in question. As a matter of fact, staying on top of things will ensure that you have work, whether you specialize in men's suits, sweet 16 dresses, or something else entirely.

DO consider the importance of presentation. The goal of fashion merchandising is to sell, and the best way to do this is by presenting yourself in the right way. Of course, this will change depending on what your wares are. For those that would like to sell men's suits, an appropriately professional attire should be worn at all times. Not only will this give the impression that you know what you're doing, but your word will be trusted more, resulting in more suits being sold.

DON'T overlook your competition. In order to sell as much as possible, you must understand what your competition is doing as well. While they might be overlooking aspects you have covered, perhaps they're exceling where you're faltering. Are they moving more merchandise? If so, is it possible that you can price your wares more affordably? These are just a few questions to ask when evaluating your competition.
