How To Care For Brass Jewelry

By Rhea Solomon

Although brass isn't very popular in terms of choosing metal for jewelry, it used to be very popular back in the day. This is mostly because, after being polished, it looks like gold but isn't as expensive overall. Because of this, it is likely that brass jewelry has already been passed down to you by your grandmothers.

The biggest problem with this particular metal is that it tarnishes quite easily. Although there are some people out there who like this tarnished look, others think that it completely ruins the jewelry. If you are part of the latter crowd, then here are some tips that you might want to pay close attention to.

It is actually quite easy to get rid of tarnishing if you use a special cleaner for the metal. However, you will need to make sure that you do not play around with the instructions and actually follow every word on them. Make sure any gemstones on the pieces do not end up absorbing the cleaners, either; otherwise, they might lose their overall sparkle.

If you aren't fond of the idea of cleaning your pieces with harmful chemicals, there are various natural cleaners out there that you can look into to get the same effect, as well. You can try scrubbing any tarnish off with tomato juice, for example, or soak the entire piece into some lemon juice or a solution of water and salt. As with the other cleaners, though, these shouldn't be used on gems of any kind.

Probably the easiest and most cost-effective way to clean these pieces would be to rub mild detergent onto it with a clean and soft cloth. Do this until it lathers up and then wash it off with hot water. If you have a lot of pieces to clean, then just fill up your sink with hot water to speed up the process. This simple solution on its own can already get rid of a lot of grime and unwanted dirt as needed.

Naturally, things shouldn't stop there, either. Once your pieces look as good as new, you have to keep protecting it from now on, so that it won't get tarnished gain later on. One easy way to do this would be to store your pieces in zipped up pouches that will protect them from air. Ideally, you should store all of your pieces in these pouches whenever they aren't being worn.

As mentioned before, brass isn't a very popular option in terms of jewelry material nowadays, no matter what age or gender. However, you might have a few pieces of your own from your great grandmothers. After all, it is very likely that they have handed down these pieces through the years.

Either way, if you want to make sure that your brass jewelry stays in tiptop condition at all times, it would be vital for you to clean it on a regular basis. This way, you and get rid of unattractive tarnish as needed. Also, do not forget to store it in a proper place in order to prevent tarnish from coming back again in the future.
